Summer is a time of fun activities that you can share with family and pets. Most animals began to feel uncomfortable when temperatures are above 85 degrees. Here are some summer tips to keep in mind.
NEVER LEAVE your pet in your vehicle. The sun can raise the temperature inside your vehicle to 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even with the windows down.
WATER, WATER. Both humans and animals need a lot of water in the summer whether they are inside or outside. Check several times daily to make sure your pet has enough water. Be careful of outside water, because bacteria can quickly form in the summer heat in a water bowl.
USE SUNSCREEN. Pets need sunscreen, just like humans do. Keep your pet out of the direct sunlight between 10 am and 4 pm. It is a good idea to rub sunscreen on the tips of ears, the skin around the lips and the tip of the nose of your pet.
MAKE SURE YOUR PET DOES NOT OVEREXERT in the summer heat. Exercise is important but overdoing it can cause your pet to overheat. Walks can be at a gentle pace. If your pet is panting a lot, it is time for a rest.
TAKE IT EASY on the elderly, very young and ill pets. They have a harder time regulating their body temperatures.
BRING YOUR PET INSIDE when the temperatures are too warm for them.
SIGNS OF OVERHEATING are excessive panting, glazed eyes, vomiting, collapse and becoming anxious. If you see any of these signs, give your pet water, spray them down with water and take them to a cool spot. If your pet does not respond, take them to the vet immediately.
